ITR and Refund Status!!

Income Tax Return Refund status: An In-depth Overview

An income tax refund is like a little financial reward from the Income Tax Department. If you have paid more in taxes than your actual dues (thanks to TDS, TCS, Advance Tax, or Self-Assessment Tax), the IT department will kindly refund the extra amount. This happens after they have worked out your tax situation, factoring in all the deductions and exemptions.
ITR Refund Status

The refund process is subject to verification and processing by the Income Tax Department. Remember, the refund process starts only after the Income tax return is verified. Usually, it takes about 4 to 5 weeks for the refund to get the amount credited in your pre-verified bank account. Speaking of which, you need to make sure you have gotten at least one bank account pre-validated for ITR e-verification.

It is advisable to check for any intimation about any discrepancies in your ITR and to keep an eye on your inbox for any emails from the IT department about your refund.

Income Tax Return Status: An In-depth Overview

The status of your Income Tax Return (ITR) reflects the current stage of its processing. It is a crucial indicator that informs you whether your filed return has been successfully accepted and processed by the Income Tax Department. Regularly monitoring your ITR status is advisable to stay informed about its progress and address any discrepancies promptly.

Understanding the Different ITR Statuses:

  • Submitted and Pending for e-Verification / Verification
  • This status arises when you have filed your ITR but have not yet e-Verified it, or your signed ITR-V has not reached the Centralized Processing Centre (CPC) yet.
  • Successfully e-Verified / Verified:
  • This status indicates that you have submitted your ITR, successfully e-Verified or verified it, but the processing is yet to commence.
  • Processed:
  • Once your ITR has been successfully processed, this status will reflect that your return has been duly handled.
  • Defective:
  • In case of defects found in your filed return due to missing essential information or inconsistencies, this status is assigned. You will receive a notice (section 139(9)) to rectify the defects within a specified timeframe. Ignoring a defective return can render it invalid and ineligible for processing.
  • Case transferred to Assessing Officer:
  • If your ITR is transferred to your Assessing Officer (AO) by the CPC, this status indicates that your AO will reach out to you for necessary information.

Accessing ITR Status for Different Roles

  • Authorized Representatives / ERIs:
  • If an authorized representative or ERI files an ITR, both the filer and the authorized representative / ERI can view the ITR status.
  • Registered Taxpayers:
  • If you file your ITR as a registered taxpayer, the status will be visible only to you on your e-Filing account.
